Akwe:Go Program
Contact Robin
Right now we are busy getting things ready to set up this new program.
There have been a lot of changes with N’Amerind’s Children’s Program. The AKWE:GO PROGRAM is a new program under a different funding agency, which also means a change in the guidelines that are followed. We provided an evening to up-date the parents on this new program and for any questions they may have. The Information Session was held on Thursday, January 19, 2006 at 4:30 which was followed scrumptious Spaghetti Dinner.

The AKWE: GO Program Goals are designed to improve the quality of life for the urban Aboriginal children through the delivery of culturally appropriate programs and services. Also, they are to provide urban Native children ages 7 – 12 with support tools and healthy activities. This is to promote their ability to make more healthy choices and activities.

The AKWE: GO Program Objectives are needed because of our Native children in urban communities who have limited access to culturally appropriate social supports which help them to make healthier and alternative life choices. More of our urban Native children, at a younger age, have to cope with poverty-related, self-esteem and peer pressure issues that may contribute to unhealthy behaviours. As a preventative measure to address these issues it is necessary to design a supportive, safe and culturally appropriate program environment for the children. Also, this program will incorporate a parent-support component which can provide basic coping skills, tools and preventative education to help add to the parent’s positive experience.

We will be working with the Family Support and Healing & Wellness Programs to provide a Positive Native Parenting classes starting on Wednesday, January 18, 2006 from 5 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. All the sessions run for 8 consecutive Wednesdays. Registration is required for the parenting classes and for childcare requests. It is important for parents to phone in as soon as possible. We need to know how many parents who will be attending because there are a limited number of seats that are available for this program. Parents will receive a certificate upon completion of their classes. If the first parent session is missed you can make it up in the next set of sessions to receive your certificate. These Parenting classes are offered to enhance and empower your parenting skills.
